Douglas Montavon's Bio
As Vice President of J.R. Jensen Construction Company, Doug has helped the company expand its project capabilities. His leadership has develped and maintained the quality construction services that Jensen’s customers have come to expect and appreciate. Doug’s commitment to value engineering and quality control ensures every Jensen project is completed successfully and within budget.
After graduating from Osseo Senior High, Doug earned an associate degree from North Hennepin Community Business College while working in residential construction. He later earned a degree in architectural drafting and design from Duluth Area Vocational Technical Institute before beginning his career at J.R. Jensen & Son Inc. in 1986. He currently serves on various labor contract negotiation committees as well as carpenters and iron workers apprenticeship committees.
Todd Rothe's Bio
Todd Rothe took over as president of J.R. Jensen Construction Company in 2004. Under his leadership, Jensen has grown from less than $5 million in annual revenue to more than $25 million, ranking it among the largest and most successful contractors in the region. Todd has helped foster numerous improvements in Jensen’s culture that have led to excellence in safety, performance, and customer satisfaction.
After graduating from Hermantown High School, Todd earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration (finance) from the University of Minnesota Duluth. His construction career started at a small commercial contractor in Minneapolis before he moved on to become a field engineer and project controls analyst for Boldt Construction, and later a project manager for Lakehead Constructors. He currently serves as a trustee for the fringe benefit funds of the Ironworkers union, and he volunteers on boards and committees for several other local organizations.
Today, Todd’s primary business focus is to continually improve the business and enhance opportunities for Jensen and its employees while providing responsive, cost-effective service and industry-leading results for its clients.

Charles Brown's Bio
As Vice President of Field Operations, Charlie is a key player in every Jensen project. He works tirelessly to serve our clients, our employees and the company to ensure the success of each and every Jensen project. Charlie’s high standards and commitment to excellence shows in his work. Throughout his career Charlie has worked at most all of the industrial & energy facility in the twin ports. His 30+ years of construction experience is an invaluable asset to Jensen and our clients.
Charlie’s construction career began in the summer of 1988 as a laborer working on bridge projects in the Twin Ports. In 1989, he was offered a carpenter apprenticeship by Keith Jensen. Over the years, Charlie has risen through the ranks of project supervision to his current position as Vice President of Field Operations.
Gary Valine's Bio
After finishing his Civil Engineering degree at Michigan Technological University, Gary worked for 3 years for a general contractor in Hibbing, MN being trained as an estimator and project manager. In 1984 he accepted a position as a project engineer for a large industrial contractor in Pontiac, MI and gained valuable experience on several Ford Motor Company and General Motors assembly plant projects in Michigan, Missouri, Virginia and New York. In 1989 Gary and his family moved back to the area to work for Lakehead Constructors in Superior, WI as a project manager, group manager and project director heading the mining group. In addition to estimating and overseeing construction on many industrial projects, one of his main responsibilities was managing and coordinating taconite plant shut-down work at Iron Range plants for US Steel and Cliffs Natural Resources.
Gary has become skilled in project administration, project management, estimating, scheduling, cost accounting, contract management, and supervision of project managers & superintendents.
In 2010 he assisted an engineering firm with project planning and development for a Canadian mining project, and also project scheduling & budgeting on a frac sand plant project. In 2013 he was asked to join Enbridge as a contracted senior project manager on a large crude oil pipeline project in ND.
Gary joined J.R. Jensen in July of 2016 and was contracted-out to Enbridge until his EIM assignment was complete in March of 2018. He brings over 35 years of construction experience to the JR Jensen team.
Matthew Johnson's Bio
As General Manager and Director of Risk Management, Matt is committed to executing Jensen’s vision of becoming the regions premiere go-to contractor for Industrial, Energy, and Commercial projects. During his tenure at Jensen, Matt has work with all aspects of our company to grow and develop our capability’s and qualifications to better serve our clients needs.
Through Matt’s vision and guidance, he has developed a thriving safety culture from the ground up. A positive culture that focuses on employee development, best work practices, and proactive thinking. His leadership has greatly contributed to Jensen’s success, as the company has grown substantially in the industrial/energy sectors, specifically the highly-regulated mining, energy, and oil & gas industries.
Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in construction management from Bemidji State University and a master’s degree in industrial health & safety from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He began his career with Jensen as a management intern in the summer of 2004 and joined the team as Jensen’s Safety Director & Project Manager in 2007.
Finance & Accounting
Andrew Mayry's Bio
Since 2004, Andy has served as Controller on Jensen’s team, helping the company grow immensely during that time. Andy’s attention to detail and accounting expertise has made a direct impact on the financial strength of the company. As Controller, he works in many different aspects with management, including preparation of financial reports such as balance sheets and income statements. Andy ensures that our contract billings are accurate, fair, concise and timely.
Andy holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Prior to joining Jensen, he worked in the newspaper industry for 10 years.
