I have been in the asphalt paving business full time since 1980. I'm actually a third generation paving contractor following in the footsteps of both my father and grandfather. Grandpa (Doc) started Northeastern Road Improvement Co. in 1939. In 1963, my father, Pepsi, took over the company upon Grandpa's death. In 1966, my father's company purchased a three-ton Barber Green Asphalt Plant, which was in operation until 2005, when the company was sold. There have been many changes in this business over the years. Asphalt paving trucks have gone from single axle, nine ton loads to more modern and much larger multi-axle trucks which can handle twenty-five ton loads. Chip & Seal roads (Macadum) gave way to asphalt (flexible) paved roads, greatly adding to the durability, smoothness and speed at which they could be installed.
Growing up in a family paving business had many ups and downs and as an employee of Northeastern Road Improvements, I had many jobs. I started as general laborer, progressing to Estimator, General Superintendent and finally as President.
In 2005, when Northeastern Road was sold, I decided to stay in the paving industry and formed DD Mitchell Construction, LLC, doing business as an asphalt paving contractor and building up my equipment fleet to where it is today.
In my spare time, I love to follow local high school, college and professional sports teams as well as play golf. I also compete in a variety of dog competitions with my Border Collie, Luke.
Over the last 33 years, I have completed many asphalt paving projects that include every local city, township and park system in Lake County, and I have completed hundreds of private projects in Lake County as well as the surrounding counties of Geauga, Ashtabula, and Cuyahoga.
