Scope Of Work
The San Diego Regional Airport Authority, formerly the San Diego Unified Port District, engaged Lopez Engineering (LEI) to evaluate existing conditions at the San Diego Airport in order to temporarily add seven standby generators in reaction to the energy shortage crisis in 2001. Site evaluation included reviewing switchgear modifications necessary to accommodate temporary engine generator installation. Existing electrical rooms were also evaluated for modifications.
A field inspection report was issued and recommendations were made to the Port. The revised design to support the added 14 MW standby generation included conversion of fifteen existing electrical switchgears to manual transfer switch insertions for the connection of the seven 2 MW standby generators. Two 1500 KVA 480 volt – 208Y/120 volt transformers were also included in the design. Electrical Infrastructure modifications were design to be left in place when the engine generators were removed in order to permit future standby power generation to easily be connected. Ongoing concern of power outages demanded an accelerated project schedule. LEI performed as Prime Consultant, Project Engineer, and provided Construction Inspection services.
