Scope Of Work

In August, 2007, this New England home earned the first LEED® Silver Certification for a private residence in the Boston area. The construction management team at Marc Truant & Associates, Inc. completed this elaborate Shingle Style home in less than twelve months. The strategy for achieving this rapid schedule was to establish a field office on-site to facilitate collaboration, enabling high productivity and very little re-work.

While many green buildings reflect a more modern design style, this home stands as testament to the cooperation of traditional architecture and progressive sustainability. Sustainability goals were achieved using innovative solutions, including staves reclaimed from twenty foot diameter wine vats to build the home's redwood deck, an underground rainwater storage system sized to offset the entire summer irrigation demand (32,000 gallon capacity), and a solar electric (9.9 kW photovoltaic) system which generates up to 10,000 watts daily and, on low demand days, feeds electricity back toward the grid. The cedar trees used in the home's gray shingle exterior were grown in a managed forest in Maine.

In addition, the demand for sustainable solutions increased environmental awareness and responsiveness in the builder material supply chain; once special order and long-lead-time materials are now widely and readily available from local sources. A recycling rate of 87% for all waste materials was achieved on this project, a figure well over national standards.
