Al Urban 's Bio
As a Reserve Army Officer, a dedicated father, and a construction professional, Al has balanced the obligations, with success, through multiple military deployments.
As a construction professional with an engineering degree and NASCLA Certification, Al began his career by starting his own business immediately after graduation. Urban Custom Construction (UCC) was a general construction firm located in PA that built residential homes. UCC perfected a panelization process in a leased shop and delivered a pre-built building to the jobsite. The building was erected on site, while managing the sitework, electrical, plumbing and finishes. After 2 years, Al transitioned to Army Officer Candidate School and Infantry Officers Basic Course at FT Benning, Georgia. As a 2nd Lt. in the Army National Guard, Al took a role at Keystone College as the Director of the Workforce Education Partnership. Again, Al transitioned back to Urban Custom Construction, now in the commercial construction market, where his firm experienced dynamic growth over a 5-year period.
In 2001, AL was called to deploy to Bosnia on Operation Joint Forge with the 1st 109th Infantry Battalion. He is awarded a meritorious service medal for his actions and his family moved to Rochester, NY while he was deployed. In 2002, AL signed on with KBR, Restoration of Iraqi Oil Project in Southern Iraq. As the Chief of Staff for KBR, Al gained valuable experience working with USACE on a $2 billion construction mega project in a combat zone. He is awarded a Commander Coin for his contributions to the project, as he is called back to America to prepare for another military deployment.
In 2004, AL deploys with the 1/109th Infantry to Western Iraq attached to the 2nd Marine Division. This 1-year deployment provided valuable experience in military operations in Iraq. He is awarded his first Bronze Star for his contributions. Upon returning to Rochester, Al worked as a Construction Project Manager on an $8M USACE project at Niagara Falls Air Force Base and then went on to work as a Senior Project Manager for Rochester General Hospital.
In 2008, Al is deployed again with the 56th Stryker Brigade, 28th Infantry Division as a Contract Officer for the brigade. As a Deployed Contract Officer, he managed over 80 contingency contracts and 40 personnel in a combat zone. He is awarded a Bronze Star for his contributions again. He returned to Rochester and his role at Rochester General Hospital to manage the development of the facility master plan at Newark Wayne Hospital and work the design of the Emergency Department. In 2011, the Army called Al to active duty to work as the Brigade Planner for a proposed brigade deployment to Iraq. In 2012, after the deployment is called off, Al retired from the military as a Major with over 27 years and took a role with KBR in Australia. Here, he worked as a Logistic Contract Manager on the Gorgon Mega Project for Chevron. The Australia Project gives Al an international business experience and an opportunity to reconnect with his family after multiple deployments.
In 2013, Global Urban Enterprise, LLC. is established with a desire to return to an entrepreneurial role in business. Al spent years getting certified as a SDVOSB and studying the market, before he formally launched the business in 2015. In 2018, Al merged his firm with AmBuild, another veteran business, to increase the market share. They are currently working nearly $5 million in construction work with over 12 employees.
Global Urban is recognized by SCORE as the Veteran Business of Year in 2017 in Rochester and AmBuild was #6 on the Rochester NY top 100 fastest growing firms in 2017.
