Our Story

Del Mar California is an affluent beach town located in San Diego County, California. Del Mar is Spanish for "of the sea" or "by the sea", because it is located on the Pacific Ocean. In 1885 Colonel Jacob Taylor purchased 338 acres from Enoch Talbert, with visions of building a seaside resort for the rich and famous. The Del Mar Horse Races are hosted on the Del Mar Racetrack every summer. The United States Navy operated a Naval Auxiliary Air Facility for blimps at Del Mar during World War II.

The population was 4,161 at the 2010 census, down from 4,389 at the 2000 census.

Geography and Climate

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles. 1.7 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square miles of it is water. At the southern edge of Del Mar is the Los Peñasquitos Lagoon. Del Mar's climate is considered sub-tropical with warm dry summers and milder winters, and is considered one of the most desirable climates in the United States. Del Mar rarely gets above 85 °F (29 °C) and rarely below 60 degrees. Del Mar is also one of few locations in which the Torrey Pine tree grows. The Torrey Pine is the rarest pine in the United States and only two populations of this endangered species exist. The Soledad Valley at the south of Del Mar severs two colony segments of the Pinus torreyana.

The 2010 United States Census reported that Del Mar had a population of 4,161. The population density was 2,341.9 people per square mile. Hispanic of any race were 175 persons (4.2%).

The Census reported that 4,161 people (100% of the population) lived in households, zero (0%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and zero (0%) were institutionalized.

According to estimates by the San Diego Association of Governments, the median household income of Del Mar in 2005 was $169,348 (not adjusted for inflation). When adjusted for inflation (1999 dollars; comparable to Census data above), the median household income was $100,982.

In the state legislature Del Mar is located in the 39th Senate District, represented by Democrat Christine Kehoe, and in the 74th Assembly District, represented by Republican Martin Garrick.

Federally, Del Mar is located in California's 50th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +5 and is represented by Republican Brian Bilbray.

Other Sites, Attractions, and Shows in and around Del Mar:

Del Mar Racetrack is an American Thoroughbred horse racing track at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in the seaside city of Del Mar, California, 20 miles north of San Diego. Operated by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, it is known for the slogan: "Where The Turf Meets The Surf." It was built by a partnership including Bing Crosby, the actor Pat O'Brien, Jimmy Durante, Charles S. Howard and Oliver Hardy.

San Diego County Fair. In 1880, a group of San Diegans organized an agricultural fair to bring county farmers together to share ideas, see who had the best citrus fruit, who baked the best pie, and who had the fastest horse. After that first fair, the county fair was held annually with a few exceptions in various county locations until 1936, when it moved to its present Del Mar home. During World War II, the Fair was suspended, but has taken place in Del Mar annually since 1946.

Torrey Pines State Beach is a coastal beach located in the San Diego County, California community of Torrey Pines, and is located south of Del Mar and north of La Jolla. Coastal erosion from the adjacent Torrey Pines State Reserve makes for a picturesque landscape. It is a local favorite among surfers and remains a quintessential Southern California beach. The beach is at the bottom of 300 foot sandstone cliffs of white and golden stone, with a greenish layer sometimes visible at the very bottom. At the north end of the beach the cliffs ends and Los Peñasquitos Lagoon, a salt marsh estuary, empties into the ocean. A county highway crosses the entrance, with limited free parking along the beach.

Del Mar Antique Show. Now in its 52nd year, the Del Mar Antique Show & Sale is the longest running family-owned indoor antique show in California and the largest south of San Francisco, with over 65,000 square feet of exhibition space. The show is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in the seaside city of Del Mar, California, 20 miles north of San Diego. It was established in 1961 by Joseph and Bettye Grimes, who at one time had shows all over the Southern California region, known as the Calendar Shows.

Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the most exclusive and challenging courses in the world. Many times placed on the PGA tour drawing the top golfers in the world.
