Scope Of Work

Valley Forge National Historical Park became a national historic park in 1976. It contains the site where the Continental Army spent the winter 1777-1778 during the Revolutionary War. Along with the lands that served as the encampment, the park also maintains historical buildings, recreated encampment structures, memorials, museums and recreation facilities. One of the most visited sites at Valley Forge National Historical Park is General George Washington’s headquarters, a restored colonial home used by George Washington as his headquarters during his time at the encampment. There are also 26 miles of hiking and biking trails within the park that 1.2 million people visit every year.

This park project encompassed increased visitor access through a design build process spearheaded by Classic. The unique feature in this area of the park was the addition of a raised paved trail between an existing roadway and a sensitive wetland/water shed area. One of the design elements chosen by Classic and their design team was the integration of gabion walls along the trailhead and the installation of a custom built pedestrian fall protection barrier along the gabion wall. During the design process infiltration beds were incorporated seamlessly into the landscape fields. A new large 50 car paved parking area for park visitors was added including newly designed restrooms and a water fountain. Specialized state of the art road crossings were added through a lengthy state permitting process allowing visitors to safely continue their journey on the opposite side of the roadway. Large quantities of earth were moved, stockpiled and efficiently reused at other locations before restoring the grassy areas of the site. All completed by Classic on schedule and budget.
