David Armstrong's Bio
As a Texas Tech graduate, with a B.S. degree in landscape architecture and over thirty years’ experience in the green industry, ranging from Texas, Arizona and Missouri, David’s residential and commercial experience includes: landscape design and installation; irrigation design and installation; lawn maintenance, project management, plant procurement, marketing, urban and development planning, historic district planning, forest service recreational planning, as well as a business owner. He recently obtained his Texas irrigators license, to add to his professional expertise.
David has developed a landscape estimating program designed to reduce the amount of operator entries. The program allows the operator to make only two entries, quantities and prices. All quantities are entered automatically from a digitizer or an on screen estimating software package or by hand. While plant names and material prices can be entered by hand or one time from the 2,000 plant material data base. The data base contains the plant name, size, price, labor factor, excavation and backfill quantities, and suppliers. The program automatically chooses the most cost effective plant price giving the customer the best plant price. This program increases the accuracy of the bids and increasing the number of projects bid.
He also developed a lawn estimating program with the same concept, where the estimator only enters the quantities for the lawn, shrub, mulch, fertilizer and herbicide areas. Then the computer makes all the mathematical calculations. By inserting the Excel program into Word, the proposal created is an all in one document saving time and increasing the number of bids estimated.
David also developed and managed an in-house landscape nursery allowing the landscape company to buy plants in bulk, as a cost saving measure. He procured an average of $500,000 of plant material annually from Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. He also developed a plant selection guide with pictures, plant descriptions and uses. The designer orcustomer can access the plant selection guide from the internet and select the plant characteristics desired, such as tree, shrub, ground cover, deciduous, evergreen, fall color, flower color, shade tolerances, and texture, resulting in a short list of plants that best fits the chosen characteristics.
David began his career with the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona, gaining his recreational design experience. He then moved back to Dallas, re-establishing his Texas roots, where he obtained commercial design and urban planning experience with Myrick, Newman and Dahlberg, landscape architects. He gained his residential design with Naud Burnett and Partners. Wanting to get out of a cubicle and into the field, he extended his career with Environmental Development Landscape Contractors, where he gained his landscape construction, irrigation and maintenance experience.
With his wife accepting a job in St Louis, Missouri, he relocated his professional career; where he eventually started a landscape design/build business. After 10 years, the decision was made to move back to Texas. Shortly thereafter, he discovered he had cancer and spent the next several years going through treatment and recuperating. Three years after cancer treatment, he decided to re-enter the work force and joined Choate Irrigation, gaining invaluable experience in the landscaping, irrigation and maintenance industries.
A cancer survivor since 2001, he has chosen to continue working in the landscape industry and launched his new company in 2009, Armstrong Landscape Management.
