Douglas is a lifelong South Bay resident, growing up in Manhattan Beach. He began his survey work at the tender age of 7, working with his father, Charles Douglas Irvine (L.S. and R.C.E.) on weekends and during the summer. Douglas then went on to get his Bachelor’s degree from California State University Long Beach, successfully completed a 4 year chief of party school program for Local 12 Operating Engineers and Land Surveyors Union, and received his LSIT designation. He then went to work along side his father at South Bay Engineering, a company of registered civil engineers and land surveyors founded over 50 years ago.
Over his long career in surveying, Douglas has worked as a Party Chief for such prestigious companies as Kajima-Wilson, Pafford and Associates, Case Surveying, and Modern Continental Roadway. Major projects under Doug’s supervision include the Portuguese Bend landslide restoration, the Colton Business Center, the Red Line Hollywood and Vine Station and North Hollywood Station, layout of the parking structure for Our Lady of Angels Cathedral , and the Alameda Corridor Project for Modern Continental Roadway. In 2002, Doug went back to South Bay Engineering, this time as the Vice President and ran daily survey operations.
In 2003, Douglas and his wife, Claudia Weitsman-Irvine decided to combine his 25 years in surveying with her credentials in real estate, marketing and management, and together they opened the doors. Since then, I/WS Surveying has performed over 1000 land surveys. Larger projects include the Manhattan Beach strand restoration, March Air force Base, Sierra Conservation Camp, St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills Estates, and residential and commercial subdivisions in Pacific Palisades, Venice, Santa Monica and in the South Bay. I/WS Surveyingwas designed to fill the gap between the small residential survey firms and the large commercial companies, providing flexibility and individual attention to all I/WS Surveying clients.
