Bill Paulette founded KBS with just a $1,000 investment in 1975. Today, it is one of the top-rated construction firms in the Mid-Atlantic delivering high-profile, multi-million projects. He has been integrally involved with the company’s growth throughout its history. With more than four decades of construction experience, he has delivered numerous multi-million dollar projects in Central Virginia. Bill is intimately familiar with all facets of project controls, schedules, budgets, client relations and contract administration.

He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) with a degree in Civil Engineering. He is a former board member of the Virginia State Board for Contractors, former chairman of the Henrico County Community Services Board and a former board member of the Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia. He is also a deacon at the River Road Baptist Church.

Bill grew up in the small town of South Hill, Va. across the street from his wife of almost 50 years. He was an all-around athlete, playing football quarterback, basketball guard and baseball pitcher in his high school teams. Today, he’s a dedicated family man, an avid Virginia Military Institute fan and a golfer. He loves to travel and has visited all 50 U.S. states.

Dennis Lynch oversees KBS’s multi-residential, senior living and hospitality division. He has been integrally involved with the company’s growth over its successful history, and has served as project manager on various multi-million dollar projects.

Dennis attended the University of Richmond and majored in Business Administration.

Dennis was born in Boston, Massachusetts and is one of 14 children all with names beginning with the letter “D.” In 1993, he coached the Tuckahoe Little League All-Stars team of 12-year-olds to the to the Little League World Series in Williamsport. In his free time, Dennis enjoys playing golf.

As chief financial officer, James Lipscombe is responsible for directing and managing KBS’s daily and long-term financial, administrative and information technology efforts based upon corporate goals, budgets, board resolutions and owner directives.

James is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. He is an active member of Construction Financial Management Association.

James began his career as a numbers guy in elementary school when he was chosen to manage and report the daily sales of school supplies. As a novice CPA, one of the first tax returns he prepared was for the 70’s rock band Black Sabbath.

As vice president, Michael is responsible for the business development, contract negotiations and execution of a number of multi-residential projects. He also takes an active role in the cost, risk and business management of these projects.

Michael attended Virginia Tech majoring in building construction.

Although Michael is a big fan of European soccer, he’s a true Richmonder at heart. He and his family live in Richmond’s historic Fan District and their house has been featured on the annual Fan Holiday Tour. He loves classic 80’s comedies like Beverly Hills Cop, Weekend at Bernie’s and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

With more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry, Steve joined KBS in 2000 as the Vice President of Preconstruction. He is responsible for preconstruction activities of all KBS projects including conceptual estimating, competitive bidding, scoping and work packaging, scheduling, contract negotiations and purchasing.

With a B.S. in Architecture from University of Virginia, Steve’s knowledge of architectural design and construction provides him with expansive knowledge of means, methods and costs.

Steve enjoys traveling with family, experiencing the great outdoors, and golfing with friends and colleagues. He aspires to be a vintner after making his first wine for a tenth-grade science project. He continues to do plenty of what he calls “research and development.”

Sam Stocks’ responsibilities as vice president include overseeing KBS’s project management and field supervisory staff. He coordinates all KBS field and office activities related to projects and allocates project staff.

Sam holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Military Institute, and a Masters in Civil Engineering from University of Hawaii. He is a registered professional engineer.

Sam is a former Naval Officer and Seabee who has lived in Hawaii, California, Georgia, Haiti and Japan. He enjoys jogging, golfing and exploring the great outdoors with his family.

As project manager, Will’s role includes project management of multiple retail, multi-residential and historic renovation projects. He provides contract administration, scheduling, subcontractor and supplier leadership and coordination, cost control, quality control, customer training and orientation and close-out. He also takes an active role in the preconstruction process, especially with regard to subcontractor prequalification.

Will graduated with Honors from the Virginia Military Institute while lettering in baseball all four years. He is a past chairman of the Associated Builders and Contractor’s (ABC) Young Leaders Council and also served as the co-chair of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Mentorship program.

From basketball and golf to pho eating contests, Will always enjoys a little light-hearted competition. He also loves to travel and has visited 46 U.S. states. His hands are full at home trying to keep up with his wife and three young daughters.

As vice president of business development, John Gillenwater oversees all corporate business development and marketing strategies and initiatives. Additionally, he directs the Special Projects Division consisting of smaller scale projects and tenant improvements.

John has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia. He is a past chairman of the Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia board.

Outside of the office, John enjoys watching his two sons play lacrosse and going on family vacations to any beach, especially Sanibel, Florida. He likes golf and fishing, and has completed four half-marathons
