Sustainable Design Practices
Miklos Peller, Sr. P.E. has been on the forefront of Sustainable Design even before it became
common practice. A brief sample of those projects include:
Westinghouse Steam Turbine Division North American Headquarters in Orlando,
Florida.
The building has the shape of a segment of a curved ring, its axial radius of curvature being 440 feet. The building measures 163.5 feet x 612.5 feet and contains 257,500 square feet. The four floors are staggered outward to shade exterior fenestration.
The structure consisted of a paired column and post system to facilitate integration among structure lighting and mechanical components. The curve of the building’s planform is uniform for uniformity of forming. Exterior walls are white painted deck.
Shure Industries Corporate Headquarters in Niles, Illinois.
This architecturally exposed concrete and steel building was designed to emphasize engineering performance rather than design and style. The skin of the 239,000 square-foot building modulates its own climate resulting in a building of high technology and low energy costs that also meets an “eco-tech” approach.
Recently Completed Near West Theatre at the Gordon Square Art District in
Cleveland, Ohio.
A super-energy efficient design, incorporating Passivhaus design elements, including solar panels and extra thick walls for insulation.
The term passive house (Passivhaus in German) refers to a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint. It results in ultralow energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling. A similar standard, MINERGIE-P, is used in Switzerland. The standard is not confined to residential properties; several office buildings, schools, kindergartens and a supermarket have also been constructed to the standard. Passive design is not an attachment or supplement to architectural design, but a design process that is integrated with architectural design. Although it is mostly applied to new buildings, it has also been used for refurbishments.
Numerous projects, both in the public and private sector, that are LEED Certified or LEED Certifiable.
Recently Completed Project that Utilized E-Builder software for Document and Schedule Management.
Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada ($120,000,000.00 CAD) completed October 2013.
Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is a 12,500 square-meter (135,000 square-feet), $120,000,000.00 (CAD) world-class family attraction with more than 5.7 million liters (1.5 million gallons) of water depicting saltwater and freshwater habitats from around the world. This world class facility opened to the public on October 16, 2013.
Peller & Associates, Inc. was involved, in this state-of-the-art project, as associate structural engineers responsible for the design of the architecturally exposed concrete exterior, foundation, all the concrete exhibits and the upper level concrete including many exhibits and had to work alongside the structural engineer responsible for the remainder of the building.
