Our Story
Air Tool Sales & Repair Co., Inc. was founded in 1918 with the issuance of a patent to Waldemar Meyer for an innovative rivet set. The company was started by Mr. Meyer and was called the Universal Air Tool Co.
The firm did most of the air tool work for the Submarine Boat Co. in Kearney, N.J. It also was involved with the shipping industry through its repair of riveting hammers and wood boring machines for this industry.
The firm has always maintained this dual track of manufacturing and repairing pneumatic equipment.
Waldemar Meyer died in 1928, leaving three sons: Walter, Alfred and Howard. Walter took over the business and ran it, successfully maintaining the dual track of manufacturing specific air tool items and repairing the best known pneumatic equipment of the period. Alfred assisted Walter in the firm.
In 1935, Walter met Alois Muller, a skilled machinist, and set up a partnership in Brooklyn. In 1939, it was incorporated under the present name and moved to Long Island City. Pneumatic Tool Sales also set up a specialized company at that time called “Bentley Machine and Tool” to satisfy war production contracts.
ATS continued its work in the pneumatic tool industry for military and shipping industry clients and also became the major supplier of radar castings for the General
Electric Co.
Walter was President of the firm, Alois ran the machine shop facility, and Mrs. Muller, Alois’ wife, was the Treasurer. Isabelle, Walter’s wife, completed the slate of officers. Pneumatic Tool Company’s machine shop developed the reputation as the best machine shop in New York City.
It’s biggest client was General Electric. Another major client was the George A. Fuller Construction Co. Pneumatic Tool Sales had a large part in assisting Fuller in the
refurbishing of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
