Hamilton College—Beinecke Student Village

Project Information

Project Location:
Clinton, NY
Status:
Completed
Structure Type:
School / College / University

Scope Of Work

Designed by Boston architectural firm Perry Dean Rogers & Partners, the Beinecke Student Center links Hamilton College's north and south campus areas. A fire-damaged 1900-vintage structure known as the "Salt Barn" was completely gutted and rebuilt as the focal point of the new student activity complex. Made entirely of wood, and utilizing heavy Douglas fir timbers, the structure's exposed beam trusses and old building facades blend nicely with the contemporary interior and surrounding buildings. A paved brick walkway connects the main campus, while a new wood-decked pedestrian bridge traversing a ravine connects the modern south campus area. Attached to the eastside of the renovated "Salt Barn" is a circular, events barn with balconies, which hosts a variety of social activities, as well as lounge areas and a windowed winter porch. At the west end, a new octagonal space houses the college post office, while a common area defined by a curved glass-block wall and an authentic 1950's style diner/coffee shop (inset) serve as meeting places for students. An assortment of alcove spaces throughout the complex provides unique spots for study or relaxation.
