Joseph F Appleton's Bio
On the day Joe Appleton began his freshman year at Auburn University, his goal was to become an architect. The day he changed his major to construction, however, is the one still etched so clearly in his mind.
“It was the summer following my freshman year, and I was working as a laborer on a commercial construction project. I noticed one of the general contractor’s project managers, dressed in a collared shirt and tie, walking toward the air-conditioned office trailer. ‘I’d like to be that guy,’ I thought to myself as I labored under the piercing sun.”
Since architecture courses had failed to pique his interest, Joe acted on his wish and switched his major to building science. He continued to work construction during summer breaks, and graduated three years later with a bachelor of science in building construction.
Now, as Batson-Cook’s senior vice president and general manager of operations for the Atlanta regional office, Joe’s workday seldom requires him to don a dress shirt and tie. It does, however, wrap him in the challenges and rewards of construction, and he wears those well. He carries ultimate responsibility for strategic planning, business development and construction operations of Batson-Cook’s private commercial work, and also manages other tasks essential to the growth of his division and the company at large.
Kevin Appleton's Bio
Kevin Appleton’s passion for construction and his commitment to building relationships with clients are the primary forces that guide him in his role as chief operations officer. As COO, Kevin oversees the construction operations of Batson-Cook’s five regional offices. He has been with Batson-Cook his entire 27-year career, and his personal construction portfolio exceeds $1 billion.
It was early in his college career at Auburn University that Kevin knew he wanted to work in field operations for a large commercial contractor. Immediately upon graduation, he joined Batson-Cook’s Atlanta office as a field engineer and rose through the ranks to become project superintendent. By this time, he was working almost exclusively on hospital projects. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of this highly-specialized field of construction and the opportunity it afforded him to build relationships with healthcare clients who repeatedly chose Batson-Cook for their construction needs.
Kevin’s proficiency as a builder and the satisfaction he derived from successfully addressing the myriad challenges of healthcare construction led him to transition into healthcare project management. He quickly rose to become senior vice president and manager of Atlanta healthcare construction, overseeing all major healthcare projects for the Atlanta office. Under his leadership, the company completed several notable healthcare projects, including Northside Cherokee Hospital in Canton, Georgia, and the original construction of and multiple expansions to Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeast Regional Medical Center in Newnan, Georgia.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Kevin earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Auburn University. He is a LEED® Accredited Professional and a Certified Healthcare Constructor, the highest level of certification attainable from the American Hospital Association. He is also an active member of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering.
Giving back to the communities in which he lives and works is a priority for Kevin. He is a member of the Cumming Chamber of Commerce and participates in the Kirkwood Neighborhood Organization. He also volunteers with Batson-Cook’s annual Clays for a Cause event, which has raised more than $1 million for a variety of Georgia-based not-for-profit organizations since its founding in 2006.
