West Branch Library

Breaking ground on a contemporary building for the West Branch of the Kansas City Public Library began normally enough. The project combined traditional building materials, brick, open steel frame, stucco and glass in a distinctive new look with a large atrium and bold contemporary detail. But, the usual challenges of mixing these traditional building techniques were made more difficult by an unusual winter, one of the coldest on record. In order to keep the project on schedule, construction of a temporary heated enclosure was required so the temperature sensitive phases of the work could continue through the winter, keeping a July opening on track.
