Scope Of Work

Since 2010, Berglund Construction has been engaged in an ongoing masonry restoration effort at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The work has included three phases: repairs at the east and west knuckle domes, repairs at the west pavilion, and repairs at the north façade parapet wall and colonnade.

The east and west knuckle dome repairs took place from December 2010 through November 2011. The project involved terra cotta cornice repairs, limestone façade repairs and roofing replacement at two different locations on the museum campus.

The repairs at the west pavilion were completed between September 2013 and August 2014. This work scope included rebuilding, tuckpointing, cleaning and patching masonry. The concrete foundation and slabs were selectively repaired. The stairs and cheek walls at the pavilion’s north and south entrances were disassembled and reassembled so that a new flexible membrane waterproofing system could be installed.

The repairs at the north façade parapet wall and colonnade occurred between March and December of 2015. The work included rebuilding, tuckpointing, cleaning and patching masonry. Additionally, a new roofing system was installed with associated sheet metal flashing and accessories.
