Scope Of Work
Major E-retailer Turns to DSI to Design and Build Modern and Efficient Data Center with Room for Growth
Newegg Inc., headquartered in the City of Industry, California, is one of the top e-retailers in the United States. It owns and operates Newegg.com (www.newegg.com) which was founded in 2001 and regularly earns industry-leading customer service ratings. The -winning website has more than 25 million registered users and offers customers a comprehensive selection of the latest consumer electronics products, detailed product descriptions and images, “how-to” information and customer reviews. Using the site’s online community, customers have the opportunity to interact with other like-minded enthusiasts.
THE CHALLENGE: Existing Data Center Cannot Support Company’s Rapid Growth
The existing data center, in the building next door, was limited space and therefore posed a problem for Newegg’s continued growth. It was also having problems providing sufficient cooling for the IT equipment.
THE SOLUTION: Design and Construct a Larger, More Modern and Efficient Data Center
The IT staff at Newegg tasked DSI with building a new 2,600 square foot data center. The new data center was built in a logistics warehouse.
To properly cool the IT load, DSI selected the Liebert DSE pumped refrigerant economization solution that met the California Title 24 requirements for data center energy efficiency. The DSE system operates in free cooling or partial free cooling mode depending upon the outdoor temperatures.
The data center was designed to support Newegg’s future IT requirements. The design consisted of the following.
Redundant 250kW UPS systems, each system with redundant battery strings
Redundant Power Distribution to the IT load
Generator back up
Redundant pumped refrigerant economization cooling systems
Humidity control
Hot Aisle Containment System
Fire and Life Safety included Pre-Action sprinklers and FM-200 gaseous fire suppression
Once complete, DSI commissioned the entire system with the UPS, PDU, Automatic Transfer Switch and Fire & Life Safety technicians. Load banks were used to replicate future IT loads, and infrared scanning was used to verify proper electrical and battery connections.
