The City of Chanhassen public works project initially began by looking at re-using an existing building in the area for their public works building. Several buildings were analyzed before it became apparent that the local office/ warehouse buildings could not meet the unique challenges of the department. This, coupled with the fact that the existing public works building was on a desirable site for development, led the staff and design team to develop a concept for a new building on an adjacent city owned property. The building was designed to meet the current and future needs of the department while minimizing negative impacts on the existing wetlands surrounding the site. The end result is a state-of-the art public works department surrounded by a mature, fully-developed natural landscape.
During the schematic design phase numerous models were developed to share with the City board and City employees to refine the design to meet everyone’s expectations.
The project utilized a construction manager approach which allowed the staff to better itemize and prioritize their needs throughout the process. This, coupled with an aggressive bidding climate, allowed the building to come in well under budget and on schedule.
