Scope Of Work
Complete reconstruction of the seven-span, 1500-FT Memorial Bridge in Springfield, MA. The historic concrete bridge carries nearly 25,000 vehicles per day over the Connecticut River.
Replacement of the entire deck system.
775 tons of steel.
12,000 CY of poured concrete.
Removal of the deck and floor beams left only five concrete-reinforced structural steel arches, 8-feet deep and 5-feet wide.
Reconstruction of the arches involved chipping 4” from the exterior arches and replacing with a mix of wet and dry Shotcrete.
Self-supporting formwork suspended from the bridge arches to allow casting of 30-foot span floor beams without any falsework.
Recasting of the four concrete monuments, 70-feet tall, each supporting original 16-foot bronze ornamental globes from 1920.
Recreation of the deteriorated cartouches (eagle monuments) using reverse molds and modern fiberglass materials.
Scope of the work increased 30 times post bid-day.
Work completed 6 months ahead of schedule.
