Scope Of Work
This project consisted of complete renovation of over 13,600 SF of Broward County’s old MedicalExaminer’s building, including a new Toxicology Laboratory, a new Robotics Laboratory, a walk-in cooler/freezer, a records vault, file and chemical storage areas, offices, several restrooms, multipurpose space with flexible furnishing, and new roof.
Thornton installed new HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, and fire protection systems. Per client request, separate contracts were issued for deionized water equipment system expansion, the security card access control system, and the final setup of lab instruments, nitrogen generator and computer equipment. Thornton contracted with the client’s preferred vendor for fume hoods and HVAC equipment and controls, and coordinated with a neighboring building to maintain their normal operations.
The Medical Examiner’s Division investigates violent, suspicious, unnatural and unattended deaths, and performs drug and poison testing for the police and health departments. It was headlined in the news during the forensic investigation into the death of Anna Nicole Smith in 2008.
