Scope Of Work

Bankers Life Fieldhouse which serves as the home to the NBA Indiana Pacers and WNBA Indiana Fever entrusted Midland Engineering Company to completely replace the failing roof this past year. The project which took more than 25,000 man hours to complete utilized more than 50 roofers and sheet metal workers organized in as many as 4 crews. The sheer size (150,000 sqft), slopes and downtown location of the project created some unique challenges that had to be overcome. Staging for this project was extremely difficult due to the constraints of space and the volume of people who visit the facility on a daily basis.

There were also many events scheduled during the time of construction which required constant communication with the owner to maintain access to the building and provide a safe environment for the patrons. There were multiple times that we were directed not to work during an event which can create some scheduling hurdles.

As for the roofing scope itself, Midland removed all of the existing roofing down to the deck.  This included a mechanically fastened EPDM membrane that served as a vapor barrier, 1.5” polyisocyanurate, 1/2″ gypsum cover board and mechanically attached PVC membrane.  We then installed 1/2″ Dens Deck Prime, Sarnavap SA, 2 layers of 2” polyisocyanurate, 5/8” Dens Deck Prime and fully adhered G410-15 (Light Gray/Lead Gray) in 2121 adhesive.  The roof membrane was finished off with a large logo made of Sarnafil G410 Evergreen.  In addition to the membrane roofing we also replaced all of the sheet metal copings, flashings and gutter liners.

Midland’s sheet metal department installed over 1500 lineal feet of coping and 870 lineal feet of tapered Sarnaclad gutter liner which had to conform to a saddle.  We also custom fabricated over half of the copings for the walls that were very inconsistent and had to be precisely field measured daily to maintain quality.  All of this work was done under the scrutiny of a General Contractor (Hunt Construction Group) and consultant (Wiss Janey Elstner).
