Scope Of Work

In 1969, Jordan Marsh opened a freestanding store in South Portland, Maine, which was the first Jordan Marsh in the state. The indoor shopping mall was added two years later, which then became the Maine Mall. At its current size of 1,200,000 square feet, it is the largest shopping mall in the state of Maine, and the largest in northern New England.

A large area of Maine Mall’s existing roof was quite old, and the mall owner was scheduled to install solar panels on the roof by the fall of 2018. The existing roof needed to be upgraded before the solar panels could be installed, so Tecta America New England’s Portland team, along with roofing techs from other Tecta America New England branches, installed a 165,500 sq. ft. Sarnafil Rhinobond induction welded roofing system to make the roof watertight for the installation of solar.

To begin, the existing membrane in some areas was cut into a 10 ft. x 10 ft. grid, and existing edge metal and flashings were removed. In one section, the existing membrane and cover board were removed and disposed of, leaving the built-up roof in place, and the existing edge metal and flashings in that area were removed.

One layer of 1/2” Georgia Pacific DensDeck cover board was installed over all of the roof areas. The cover board was mechanically fastened using Sarnafil Rhinobond plates and Sarnafastener XP fasteners at the rate of 6 per board in the field, 10 per board at a 12 ft. wide perimeter, and 16 per board at all 12 ft. x 12 ft. corners.

Once the cover board installation was complete, the white Sarnafil .060 S327 PVC Rhinobond roofing system was then mechanically attached. In addition, the Portland in-house metal shop fabricated a snap-on metal edge system using continuous 24 gauge galvanized receiver and 24 gauge Kynar cover. Several differ-ent colors were chosen from the PAC-CLAD color chart to match the current sid-ing/fascia. Rhinobond plates secured the perimeter at 12 inches on center with the field sheet bonded up and over the receiver with a 24 gauge Kynar cover.

Lastly, our skilled crews installed sections of Sarnatred-V where required. Sarnatred-V is a rolled-out, heat-welded walkway that has a “chevron” design which is used to create safe pedestrian access and protect the Sika Sarnafil membrane from foot traffic.
This large reroofing job was finalized at the end of July, and the owner received a 20 year, 70MPH Sarnafil system warranty.
