Scope Of Work

On June 1, 2018, the City of Beaufort, S.C., announced the completion of the Boundary Street Beautification Project. Boundary Street (U.S. Highway 21) is the primary entrance to the City of Beaufort and the Beaufort National Historic Landmark District. Preferred Materials, Inc. was the prime contractor among the 20 contractors, subcontractors, utility providers and regulatory agencies that worked together to deliver an on-time and on-budget project.

The Boundary Street Beautification Project was just over one mile long, which Preferred repaved the roads with 21,000 tons of new asphalt. Additional improvements to the corridor included: the underground relocation of about 35 miles of overhead cables and communication lines, upgrades to drainage systems, the installation of sidewalks on both sides of the street, and the installation of new streetlights along with locally-sustainable landscaping. Another key element in this project included the improvement of traffic flow through the use of “smart” computerized traffic controls, reducing urban clutter while creating a safer environment for travel.

A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place on June 1, to celebrate the completion of this major project that began in January 2016. The Boundary Street Beautification Project is one of the most complex construction efforts undertaken in the area. The Boundary Street Redevelopment Corridor plans caught eyes at the federal level in 2011 as Beaufort earned the 16th largest federal Highway Administration grant that year and the largest in South Carolina history.
