Project Description: The largest internet search engine company has outgrown its 100,000 square feet of space in Venice and will soon be a resident of the tech hub of Playa Vista. The tech company has signed a new lease for this enormous campus of four historic buildings, including a pair of enormous, 88,000 sq. ft. aircraft hangars, for a new life as creative office space.
The buildings are among 11 on a 28-acre site that formerly housed headquarters, design and construction facilities for Hughes Aircraft, and are the last to be redeveloped and repurposed for the Ratkovich Company’s “Hercules Campus” in Playa Vista. Designed as a sustainable environment that fosters innovation in film and video, virtual reality, advertising, technology and other creative sectors, the development takes its name from the famous aircraft built in those two huge hangars: the H-4 Hercules, better known as the Spruce Goose, still the largest aircraft ever built. Early examples of glulam-beam construction, the two 740 ft. long wooden hangars, longer than two football fields end-to-end, features clear-span widths of 120 ft. with the arching beams reaching 72 ft. about 7 stories above the floor at their highest point.
