Scope Of Work

As the first phase of the twenty-acre midtown development project in downtown Elizabeth, New Jersey, a 583 space multi-level parking garage was completed in 1999 by Sea Crest Construction. The project design requirement specified the replacement of 600 existing surface parking spaces in the redevelopment area with a five (5) level garage, located immediately adjacent to the Broad Street Station utilized by the New Jersey Transit and the AMTRAK Northeast Corridor Line.

In order to meet the challenges of an irregular shaped one-acre site completely boarded by the elevated Northeast Corridor tracks and major city streets, the precast concrete structure erection required very close coordination with AMTRAK and the City of Elizabeth. An additional major constraint was presented by the railroad catenary wire array, which encroached into the air space above the structure.

The site constraints were successfully reflected in the precast design and the construction management phase was detailed to eliminate any potential conflicts and delays which could have resulted from working so closely to existing streets, utilities and the railroad elements.

An attractive feature of the completed structure employed the use of a thin brick veneer treatment on the exterior face of the spandrel panels. This material effectively continued a predominant architectural theme already present in the downtown business district.
