Aurora Contractors was the General Construction prime contractor for Sachem East High School, the largest high school on Long Island. The project consisted of the construction of a new 420,000 SF facility on a site of approximately 75 acres.
The contract fell under the NYS Wick’s Law, which necessitates that the mechanical trades receive prime contracts directly with the school district. As the General Contractor, Aurora was responsible for the coordination of the entire project, totaling approximately $85,000,000.
Aurora also provided the Owner with significant value engineering suggestions, such as replacing the specified brick with a utility size brick. These changes saved the Owner over $1,000,000.
The site is located at the highest point on Long Island, NY, which experiences severe weather conditions. Aurora was instrumental in modifying the site work in order to alleviate significant erosion problems, due to the over 100-foot change in grade.
The make-up of the building consisted of typical masonry cavity walls, as well as structural metal framing, brick veneer and a three-story curtain wall system. The school contains an Olympic size pool, two gymnasiums and a cafeteria located on the second floor.
