Scope Of Work

The Virginia Military Institute’s Marshall Center for Leadership and Ethics is a 49,000 SF assembly facility designed to serve multiple functions for the Corps of Cadets. The 500-seat auditorium has a tiered seating arrangement, theatrical lighting, a concealed catwalk, and a backstage equipped for theatrical productions. The assembly hall features “break-out” rooms arranged so that they may be added to or isolated from the assembly hall by means of operable walls. The dining facility’s warming kitchen supports the assembly hall for banquets and conferences and provides catering for up to 800 meals. The auditorium is acoustically isolated from the assembly hall, and incorporates numerous acoustically-driven features.

The Project includes significant utility and site work required by obsolete existing utilities systems. The site work also includes two bioretention filters to improve water quality downstream of the site. Marshall Hall has its own boiler and chiller plant and is independent of plant utilities for HVAC. The heating, air conditioning and ventilation system is designed to preserve the acoustic isolation of the Auditorium.

Also included in the Leadership and Ethics Center are meeting rooms of various sizes, staff offices, and support spaces intended to support the wide variety of activities the Center will host. There is a well-developed audiovisual system in the building that will set new AV standards for the Institute. Architectural details and finishes are commensurate with the military architecture of the VMI post, and are distinct due to the high level of precision with which they are executed.
