Scope Of Work

Milestone was selected as the Construction Manager for the Throwback Brewery at Hobbs Farm, which dates back to the 1860s.

The massing of the building itself remains unchanged and the existing concrete silo was not altered. Minor changes to the envelope included the installation of glazed sliding doors (replacing an existing industrial garage door) to emphasize the connection to the site. The original windows were replaced by new windows that match the color, size and shape of those that they replaced. The existing cupolas were restored and the one remaining, damaged weathervane was replaced with two new weathervanes crafted by a local artisan.  Finally, despite a desire to preserve it the slate roof was deemed to be beyond its lifespan; the slate was salvaged and replaced with a standing seam metal roof to accommodate south-facing solar panels (planned for spring, 2016) and match the tone of the original roof.

Budgetary constraints promoted the innovative reuse of salvaged wood and other materials. The wood flooring, sliding doors, custom bar, toilet partitions, railings and wood tables were all fabricated out of wood salvaged from various parts of the original interior.  The goal of reusing materials served several purposes: budget demands, a desire to preserve the historic barn and the expression of the Brewery’s brand – a throwback to a simpler time and way of being.  Although the result appears simple and rustic, the Milestone’s expert craftsmanship and high level organization made this careful use of resources possible.
