Scope Of Work
Designed by Charles A. Coolidge and constructed between 1899 and 1903, Memorial Church was commissioned by Jane Stanford in memory of her husband. The building has a cruciform footprint and is designed in the Mission Revival Romanesque style that is characteristic of the original campus core. The exterior is clad with local sandstone, and the north elevation features ornate carved stone and an elaborate mosaic.
ARG Conservation Services (ARG/CS) began work on the church in 2011, when Stanford University requested that an existing conditions study be conducted for the wooden window frames and the sandstone gable. During the summer of 2012, twelve windows on the south elevation were repaired and painted.
In the spring of 2013, a second phase of work was conducted on the north elevation. As the general contractor, ARG/CS worked closely with the university’s Offices of Zone Management, the Campus Architect, and Memorial Church’s Office of Religious Life. Surveys and mock-ups were used prior to implementing repairs. Work included wood maintenance on the frames surrounding decorative stained glass, conservation of the first-level faux-finished windows, and masonry treatments on the decorative sandstone.
