Scope Of Work
The Mills Building is a highlight of San Francisco’s storied built environment. The building stands at 220 Montgomery Street in the Financial District and is distinguished by its intricately carved terra cotta, brick, and marble façade. Built in 1890, the original structure survived the 1906 earthquake with severe damage and underwent several rounds of repair and expansion, including the addition of the Mills Tower in 1931. It was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
At the time of its 2002 renovation, nearly a century of accumulated dirt marred both street-facing sides of the building. ARG Conservation Services was contracted to survey and clean all terra cotta, brick, and marble masonry surfaces. The firm performed materials tests and painstakingly cleaned the façade, uncovering the building’s architectural features while protecting its historic character.
