Scope Of Work
Elyria High School, located in Lorain, Ohio, has a long history of educational excellence. Founded in 1830, it was the first chartered high school west of the Allegheny Mountains. The oldest section of campus, the Washington Building, is on The National Register of Historic Places while several other buildings date back to the early 1920s.
While these original buildings served generations of students, they were badly decayed by the turn of the millennium. The school board went to the community with construction millage requests three times before gaining approval on the fourth try. In 2007, the community voted to approve a 28-year, $45-million tax levy to build and maintain a new high school. The state of Ohio would contribute another $23 million for a total project cost of $68 million. At the time, it was the largest school project underway in Ohio.
The new facility would be situated on the site of the current high school, but the school also bought the land south of the site for expansion. Overall, the project spanned 317,000 sq. ft. – an entire city block – and included restoration of the Washington Building. The resulting Division I high school was designed to accommodate 2,113 students.
