In an effort to improve the water quality for the residents of the City of Indianapolis, IN, Citizens Energy Group needed to build a combined sewer overflow (CSO) collection system at multiple locations.   The main function of this project is to construct a pump station to empty the tunnel system and deliver the flow to the Southport Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The project consists of construction of a pump station building including HVAC, electrical, instrumentation/SCADA to support the operation of the pump station building.  Construction of a screening and grit removal system in and around the Screen and Grit Shaft. Approximately 180 ft. of 6 ft. inside diameter Connector Tunnel between the Screen and Grit Shaft and the Pump Room; A subterranean Pump Room 275 feet below the surface and with approximate inside dimensions of 60 ft. wide by 98 ft. long by 66 ft. tall containing the following major components:

A 72” pump suction header with a 72” knife gate valve; Four Main Tunnel Pumps (MTPs) with capacity of 36 million gallons per day including suction and discharge piping, valves, and appurtenances; An elevated service platform for access to the motors for the MTPs;

Two Emergency Dewatering Pumps (EDPs) including discharge piping, valves, and appurtenances; One Header Dewatering Pump (HDP) including suction and discharge piping, valves, and appurtenances; Two Sump Pumps including discharge piping, valves, and appurtenances; and An overhead bridge crane in the Pump Room. A 275 feet deep and 35 to 44 ft inside diameter Main Access Shaft and adit with an enclosed elevator, enclosed stairway and various utility systems; A 279 feet deep and 16 to 23 ft diameter Equipment Shaft with embedded electrical conduits; An at-grade Pump Station Building including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, mechanical, instrumentation and control, and electrical systems to support the operation of the Pump Station Building, Main Access Shaft and the Pump Room;

An at-grade Main Access Shaft Building above the Main Access Shaft; An at-grade Discharge Chamber to receive flows from the MTPs, EDPS, HDP and sump pumps; Site work including placement and compaction of fill, rough grading, final grading, site access roadways and extension of utilities from the adjacent  Southport AWT.
