Project:

Dixie Anchoring System Steel Piers were installed as a deep foundation system to support a new house. The new housing sub-division is located along the shore of Lake McQueeney. The Engineer and Contractor decided to use helix steel piers rather than installing a very costly concrete piering system. The concrete piers required casing due to very difficult soil conditions, therefore, the concrete piers were not economically feasible compared to the helix steel pier system. South Coast Helix Foundations, Inc. installed twenty-eight (28), 1 ½" x 1 ½" rounded corner solid square shaft helix steel pier with a single 8" diameter bearing plate lead section, at fourteen (14) column locations (two (2) helix steel piers at each location). Each helix steel pier required an installation torque of 5,000 ft-lb (25,000 lbs. working load). The pair of helix steel piers were necessary to resist 32,000 lbs. vertical load, 5,200 lbs. lateral load and a 38,000 ft-lb over turning moment. The helix steel piers were advanced to lengths of twenty-five (25) and thirty (30) feet at approximately a ten (10) degree angle from vertical. A top attachment bracket for new construction (plate series) was bolted to the end of each helix steel pier and will be cast into a concrete pier cap. The local building codes require the house to be elevated above the flood plain, therefore, a steel support column will then be bolted to the concrete pier cap that will extend approximately fifteen (15) feet above the lower ground surface. The helix steel pier portion of the project was completed in less than two (2) days!
