Project:

A historical building was experiencing differential foundation movement. Other underpinning methods previously used to stabilize the foundation had failed. The project engineer and contractor decided to install helix steel piers after learning about the Dixie Anchoring Systems in an ASCE seminar presented by South Coast Helix Foundations, Inc. Seven (7) helix steel piers were installed at two (2) different locations under the structure. Each helix steel pier was a 1 ½" x 1 ½" rounded corner solid square steel shaft with a single lead section having a 10" diameter bearing plate. The helix steel piers were installed to a depth of seventeen (17) feet. A standard underpinning bracket was attached to the concrete grade beam which will transfer the foundation load to the helix steel pier in order to stabilize the structure from future settlement. Each helix steel pier installation torque was monitored and verified by using a shear pin torque indicator. The helix steel piers were loaded to 10 kips of vertical load. The installation of the helix steel piers were completed by a certified crew in one (1) day.
