Scope Of Work

T.Y. Lin International (TYLI) served as Engineer of Record for a new cable dehumidification system for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Bay Bridge), known formally as the William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge. Serving local communities for over 50 years, the Bay Bridge crosses 186 feet above the Chesapeake Bay and is a vital link between the State of Maryland’s eastern and western shores.

The cable dehumidification system for the Bay Bridge is the first of its kind in North America and designed to extend the service life of the main cables. Technologies introduced by TYLI represent a significant advancement in the rehabilitation and preservation of historic suspension bridges.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:

A cable wrap system secures air tightness, with dehumidified airflow maintained through the cables to prevent corrosion and preserve load-carrying strength.

TYLI’s markup demonstrations determined the ideal cable wrap patterns.

Adequate airflow is achieved through efficient sealing, optimal placement of injection and exhaust points, well-calibrated instrumentation, and effective mechanical, monitoring, and control systems.
