Scope Of Work
San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is one of Whitson CM’s industrial clients. To assist the facility in complying with the Industrial General Permit, Whitson CM and California Filtration Specialists (CFS) came up with a decentralized solution to treat stormwater at each individual storm drain inlet.
The MTS Trolley Yard Maintenance Facility does not have standard storm drain inlet sizes. Because of this, Whitson CM and CFS designed a durable, plastic catch basin insert that was easily manufactured to different sizes. A LIDMAT composed of LIDMIX has been installed in each unit. Additionally, each unit has a built-in sampling port to take a stormwater sample post-BMP. LIDMIX is a specialized media contained within a permeable geotextile fabric (LIDMAT) that lets stormwater flow through the system at a rapid rate while particulate and soluble forms of the pollutants are filtered out of the runoff. It has been extensively tested in field and laboratory settings with the following results: 98% reduction in Lead, 97% reduction in Copper, and 64% reduction in Zinc.
The catch basin inserts and LIDMATS were easily installed in 20 storm drains at the facility in early 2017. LIDMATS/LIDMIX was chosen for this facility because of its benefits including, but not limited to:
- Decentralized Treatment - Treat Runoff at the Source
- Pollutant Removal Rates below IGP NALs for: Copper, Lead, Zinc, Aluminium, Iron, Nitrate as N, TSS, TN, TP
- Extensively Tested in Field and Laboratory
- Customize Size of LIDMAT
- High Flow Media - Minimal Clogging
- Low-Cost Solution to Meet Water Quality Requirements
