Scope Of Work

Michels was contracted to bridge the gap across the historic Potomac River separating Maryland and Virginia by installing an 8" steel conduit from an astonishing 10,300 linear feet. The conduit will house a long-haul ?ber optic line from Washington, D.C. to Richmond, VA. Michels designed and installed steel containment casing at both ends of the crossing and established the design for ample cover at critical contours by adjusting entry and exit locations and designing the pro?le to pass through known suitable formations at favorable depths. Michels secured access to an abandoned airplane runway on one end of the project to allow most of the pipe to be set up in three strings. Reducing the number of welds is a key factor in the success of large projects. After the 8" conduit was pulled back into place, Michels installed three strands of 1 1/4-inch innerduct into it. After the innerduct was in place, Michels pulled more than 10,000 feet of ?ber optic cable into it. The combined efforts allowed the customer to know that there would be a consistent commitment to quality in all phases of construction and that the work would be done in a controlled manner.
