Scope Of Work

The scope of this project was interior remodeling of the 2nd floor and subsequent underfloor/above ceiling repair work on the 1st floor. This Courtroom was constructed atop the Structural Roof project, also performed by Valiant. The work consisted of both new construction and renovation of approximately 4,233 sf to accommodate a new Lightwell Courtroom and associated spaces located on the existing 2nd floor of the Historic Gene Snyder U.S. Courthouse and Customhouse located in downtown Louisville, KY. The historic courtrooms on either side of the new courtroom were fully operational during construction.

                The area of renovation for the New Lightwell Courtroom occurred in the existing exterior lightwell which was directly over a newly renovated Federal Office space. Work has included demolition, asbestos and lead abatement, wood trim work and casings, intricately detailed, custom millwork, fixed benches, jury seating, roofing, detention doors/hardware and metal wall panels, glass curtainwall, insulated metal panels, structural steel, fireproofing, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, security infrastructure and AV infrastructure work. Full scale mock-ups of new millwork were required for USDC approval.

                To build the new courtroom atop the newly-reinforced roof, the Valiant team had to first move a large boiler exhaust fan off of the first floor roof and onto a new platform constructed on the second floor. The Courthouse building encompasses an entire city block and in order to access the space for the boiler a large crane was needed. To maneuver such a large piece of equipment through the narrow downtown streets was a challenge.

Valiant worked very closely with GSA and Building Managers to coordinate work and limit disruptions to operational courts. Valiant performed a large portion of work after hours. Great teamwork and strict adherence to schedule enabled this project to complete ahead of schedule.
