Scope Of Work

Atkinson will repair or replace the deteriorating I-5 northbound concrete pavement through downtown Seattle from Martin Luther King Jr Way to the south to Ravenna Blvd. Bridge to the north—approximately 12.5 miles. Work includes select panel replacement and full-depth pavement replacement with Portland Cement Concrete pavement, as well as grind and replace asphalt shoulders, upgrade drainage structures, replace traffic loops, install permanent pavement striping, and perform diamond grinding of the roadway surface to ensure ride quality. A major portion of the work includes the removal and replacement of 36 mainline and 34 ramp bridge expansion joints and six bridge approach slabs.

Atkinson must complete all work at night or on weekends in order to minimize impacts to traffic (more than 120,000 vehicles/day). This is critically important because of the project’s potential to significantly impact motorists, residents, businesses, and events near Seattle—a City already disrupted by unprecedented construction activity. Atkinson committed to complete all work using only 10 weekend lane closures and one weekend full closure of northbound I-5—with weekend preparatory work performed at night. The dates for each closure will be selected in collaboration with WSDOT, the City of Seattle, and major sports teams (e.g., Seattle Mariners, Seattle Sounders, and Seattle Seahawks), to avoid impacts to city events (e.g., Seafair, Seattle Center, Emerald City Marathon, Safeco Field and Century Link Field non-sporting events), and university graduation ceremonies (e.g., University of Washington, Seattle University, and Seattle Pacific University).
