Scope Of Work

When the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and UT Health San Antonio formed a partnership to create a clinically integrated cancer care program, they needed to develop the appropriate facilities to support it. They hired Vaughn to renovate three connected buildings that comprise the Mays Cancer Center.

On the third floor of the Zeller Building, Vaughn converted existing office and infusion space into a pharmacy so the Owner could mix chemotherapy treatments on site. The 3,500 SF  includes a control room, clean rooms with multiple fume hoods and sterile cart pass-throughs between managed air spaces, cold storage rooms, and a service window to interact with hospital staff. The relocation of the specialized pharmacy to the third floor allows the Owner to quickly and easily transport medicine to the infusion center for patient treatments.

Vaughn also renovated the first, second, and third floors of the Urschel Tower. The first floor serves as the clinic’s welcome center and includes a 1,950 SF diagnostic laboratory, and multiple phlebotomy stations. The second-floor family center includes a reception desk, a home-inspired living room, offices for the director of patient and family services, a social worker, and dietitian, as well as a teaching kitchen to educate patients and families about preparing meals to support a healthy lifestyle. The entire third floor is dedicated to infusion stations for chemotherapy treatment and several private infusion rooms for highly compromised patients.

In the Grossman Building, Vaughn renovated two linear accelerator vaults to house two new Elekta linear accelerators. The project also included a new power upgrade to the central plant and the addition of two new transformers.
