Scope Of Work
The project consists of a major rehabilitation to the seven gates on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal located at the Des Plaines River in Lockport Illinois that were originally constructed in the 1890’s. The Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, linking the south branch of the Chicago River to the Des Plaines River at Lockport was opened on January 2, 1900. This historic system was named a Civil Engineering Monument of the Millennium by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The Canal was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 2011. The renovation/repairs were necessary to ensure operational integrity of the lock gates and dam. The brick and granite exterior façade which protect the concrete structure were demolished and replaced. Other features of work included clearing, grubbing and removal of debris from the navigation pool, tuck pointing masonry, repair and replacement of stone masonry, repair of the bulkheads, bullnoses, gate tower, and miscellaneous concrete repairs. Coffer Dams were completed, and pumps were manned “around-the-clock” 24 hours each day and 7 days each week to maintain safe and suitable work areas. Scaffolding was constructed for demolition and reconstruction of the masonry and structural repairs. While in dry conditions, the gate seals were replaced to achieve a durable and operational gate system
