Scope Of Work

This project included the design and replacement of 6 bridges at Fort Campbell, KY which were damaged due to heavy military vehicle traffic. Work scope included clearing, bridge removal and new bridge construction with paved approaches and guard rails. Specific work elements included:

Land Clearing & Tree Felling – Prior to bridge removal vegetation was cleared to provide a 12’ wide full-length track and trimmed regularly for the duration of the project

Erosion Control / Low Water Crossings – Exposed organic soil was removed, placed off to the side, and compacted to create a smooth surface. Drainage channels were maintained. Stream banks, slopes, and road access are smooth enough for a HUMVEE to negotiate. Gravel that had built up in the stream was excavated and placed on a nearby stream bank. Low water crossings remained accessible to HUMVEE traffic during the entire length of the construction project. Exposed soil was seeded/strawed to prevent erosion.

Bridge Removal – All existing bridge components and approach pavement were removed and disposed of per Fort Campbell policy

Bridge Construction –Standard DOT bridge guardrails are installed per American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Bridge deck were striped with (2) 4” wide solid yellow thermoplastic centerlines plus a 4” wide white edge thermoplastic stripe on each side.

Paving – Approaches (50’ minimum length on each approach) received asphalt pavement and built to grade. Bridge approaches were striped with (2) 4” wide solid yellow thermoplastic centerlines plus a 4” wide white edge thermoplastic stripe on each side.

Signage – Bridge approaches received yellow and black retro-reflective warning signs on both side barriers, plus load limit signs
