Scope Of Work
Fairfax County Health Department relocated its Health Laboratory to the Belle Willard Center in Fairfax, Virginia; an existing brick building which previously functioned as an elementary school. The LEED Gold Certified structure went through an asbestos abatement and the exterior received a facelift to include new iron, wood slat and brick pier fencing and landscaping as well as a repaved parking lot. The technical infrastructure that was put in place allows for 24/7/365 uninterrupted operation. This system includes a 750 KVA Energy Generator with a 3,000 gallon fuel tank. The security system allows for around the clock security with over 20 card readers and 15 interior/exterior surveillance cameras that feed to the Fairfax County Government Center Headquarters. New electrical service/power pole and duct banks were installed to feed the building.
A unique feature of the laboratory is the Biosafety space, otherwise known as the BSL-3 area. Level 3 is the second highest containment level that a laboratory can achieve. This type of construction requires detailed precautions to seal off the space to prevent any outside contamination. Inside the Biosafety space are custom seamless stainless steel cabinetry, clean room ceilings, and specialized equipment that required extensive excavation prior to installation. Beyond the ceilings are welded and sealed stainless steel ductwork, electrical cabling, and associated devices.
