Scope Of Work
The National Children’s Museum is a nationally recognized cultural and educational institution serving children and families onsite and through national programs and partners. The Museum’s exhibits and innovative educational programs spark the imagination and celebrate the true power of children, motivating them to become people who make a difference in the world.
rand* and Hickok Cole collaborated during the preconstruction and design phase to create a space that would accommodate NCM’s needs while adhering to their budget. The GMP contract was an interior fit-out of an existing street level “cold-dark shell” retail space. The major elements of this project included a new storefront system, an 18,000 sf slab on-grade, a new 6,000 sf mezzazine structure and staircase, and a theater.
Providing the requested ceiling heights came with many challenges. The space sits beneath a 9-level Wyndham hotel which required strict coordination with the existing building’s MEP systems. Furthermore, working within the hotel noise restrictions and the National Harbor design guidelines was paramount. Although NCM did not pursue LEED certification, the project utilized sustainable best practices including multiple energy recovery units and ample use of daylight with the storefront system.
