Scope Of Work

High Construction was selected by Stanbery Development to build The Shoppes at Wyomissing, an upscale shopping center near Reading, Pa. The 14-acre site where the retail center now resides was previously used as a dump for debris from the construction of the new Route 422/Route 222 corridor. This debris rendered the land unusable without extensive clean up. The extent of clean up was uncertain at the onset of the project, but was later found to be as deep as 20 feet in some areas. In addition to dealing with the debris that was placed on the site, the site itself was extremely rocky. Site work was extensive and involved drilling, blasting, and rock crushing for the entire site. This was done during the winter months where precipitation and temperatures added further challenges. Drilling and blasting continued for over a month in order to get the site to grade; and rock crushing occurred for three months. The large amount of rock at the site also made it challenging to get utilities, such as gas and electric, to the site. Other site challenges included a severe slope with an existing pump station situated at the bottom, as well as existing sewer lines that needed to be relocated. To protect the pump station, High built a retaining wall that extended as high as 28 feet. High was also responsible for relocating all of the live gravity and force main piping for the sewer lines, in order to build the shopping center. Furthermore, the existing sewer pump station was required to stay active and operational throughout the project’s duration. Today, the finished center includes a diverse retail mix with such stores as Jos. A Bank, Talbots, Ann Taylor LOFT, Coldwater Creek, Chico’s J. Jill, The Children’s Place; and Starbucks.
