Scope Of Work
This 74,200-square-foot middle school project includes the construction of six buildings, landscaping and site improvements. The buildings include a two-story, 22-room classroom building, administration building, gymnasium, food service building, library/media arts building, and a multi-purpose art and music building.
The first phase included the classroom building and the multi-purpose building, along with the essential site work and landscaping necessary to accommodate an active campus. Phase two included the construction of the remaining four buildings, site work and landscaping.
Many sustainable features were incorporated into the project, which was designed by Lionakis Architecture. Examples include energy-saving occupancy sensors in each classroom; a programmable energy management system for HVAC and lighting; solar tubes on the roof that bring natural daylight into interior corridors; and drought tolerant plants on a reclaimed water system.
In 2016, Balfour Beatty and the San Diego Green Building Council (SDGBC) partnered with Pacific Trails Middle School to host Green Apple Day of Service. The event brought together more than 40 volunteers comprised of students, parents, teachers, family members, Balfour Beatty and SDGBC employees, as well as representatives from supporting sponsors and vendors. Together the volunteers spent a full day constructing
four 20-foot by 4-foot planter boxes in which plant species mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare were planted. The garden also serves as an outdoor classroom and meeting space for the school’s Garden Club.
