Scope Of Work
The Kings Courthouse in Hanford, California, is Sundt’s fifth completed capital project for California’s judicial branch. The four-story with basement building is in Hanford’s civic center, where it serves as an attractive landmark as well as a much-needed replacement for a collection of old, outdated judicial facilities that didn’t meet current security standards.
The 144,600-square-foot facility includes 10 courtrooms, with another two spaces shelled out for growth, plus a jury assembly room, subterranean parking structure/holding cell and an underground tunnel that connects to the nearby jail. An energy-efficient “thermal mass” HVAC system makes ice at night, when energy rates are lowest, and uses it to keep the building cool during the day.
In addition to accommodating criminal, civil, juvenile and family law cases, the courthouse includes a self-help center and family court mediation rooms. Security is improved with the incorporation of separate hallways and facilities for the public, court staff and in-custody detainees.
