Scope Of Work

Project Description:
This project involved the construction of a new baggage handling system at Terminals 13 and 14 at Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport in Maryland. This included a new outbound baggage handling system for Air Tran Airways, and two inbound baggage handling systems.

A new building addition was constructed which houses the new baggage processing equipment, both inbound and outbound. The construction of the building involved all trades, including structural steel, masonry, roofing, mechanical and plumbing systems, electrical systems, all finishes, and site improvements, including concrete and asphalt paving. Electrically, the project involved interior and exterior lighting, controlled access security systems, video surveillance systems, fire alarm, communications, audio-video devices, multi-user flight information displays, and voice paging systems. The new control systems for fire and security were seamlessly integrated into the existing airport systems.

A major item of work was the furnishing and installing of the baggage handling systems and all associated instrumentation and equipment and coatings. The new baggage handling equipment will provide inbound and outbound conveyor systems, and will also include new baggage scanning machines capable of detecting explosive material.

Phase I of the project included the installation of a snow melt system, a permanent police corridor, and the enclosure of the new addition to weather-tight conditions. Among the challenges faced by the construction team was the need for extremely close coordination among all the trades. However, these challenges were met and the building enclosure was substantially completed. The new baggage handling system is capable of processing 1800 bags per hour.
