Scope Of Work

In 2013, the Texas Legislature initiated a new era of higher education for the state by drawing upon the resources and histories of two prominent institutions in the Rio Grande Valley. By combining these entities, the legislature established The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) with a singular focus, “transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and healthcare.” The University of Texas System selected Vaughn Construction to deliver the first building on this new campus, one that would serve as the cornerstone of this new era. With our understanding of the building’s significance to the university, as well as the challenges involved with delivery of such a highly technical facility within a relatively unknown market, our approach was simple: MAKE A STATEMENT.

Designed to promote and attract world-class medical education and scientific research to the region, the South Texas Medical Academic Building (STMAB) serves as the new home to the UTRGV School of Medicine by providing educational and administrative space to facilitate the training of medical students and other health professionals throughout the region. Comprised of two separate buildings totaling 88,000 SF, STMAB features a multitude of shared-use classrooms, gross anatomy teaching areas, preclinical MD labs, as well as a clinical skills center and a 142-seat auditorium, all of which contain state-of-the-art technology to accommodate distance learning and interaction with existing campuses in Brownsville and Harlingen.

By utilizing a “can do” approach, and by establishing and maintaining an “all for one” teamwork environment with the trade contractors, design team, and the Owner, we successfully delivered the STMAB project on time and within budget. UTRGV enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015 and the School of Medicine opened in 2016.
