Scope Of Work
The School of Art and Design at Texas State University is one of the largest programs for visual arts in the country. But it was housed in two separate buildings constructed in different decades. When constructed each facility was state-of-the-art for its time period. As the university’s fine arts program expanded, a new breed of artists required more open, modern space. The university planned a phased renovation of both facilities to better support its programs. We served as construction manager-at-risk to improve the usable spaces, as well as upgrade and modernize the MEP systems and architectural features to align with other recent renovations and new construction on campus.
In the Joann Cole Mitte Building, we renovated existing classrooms, offices, photo labs/dark rooms, and art galleries, and built out new digital photo processing labs, dark rooms, sound recording rooms, lecture rooms, and offices. We upgraded or reconfigured the MEP systems to better serve the new areas.
In the Sabinal Building, we completely gutted the existing facility and built back classrooms, computer labs, seminar/lecture rooms, offices, and updated restrooms. We installed storefront windows and vestibules at the entrances to allow more natural light into the building. We installed a canopy system to enhance the primary entrance and added a courtyard that serves as a meeting/lounging area for students. We also completely replaced the mechanical system, electrical system, and roof, and made improvements to the exterior skin and landscaping.
The newly renovated facilities now offer fine art and communication students a modern, open space with a top of the line support system in which to develop the next great creative piece.
